The ancient Greek town Chersonesus |
Sevastopol
During the tour tourists will pass lots of breathtaking landscapes following the serpentine road between the Black Sea and spectacular Crimean mountains. On our road up to the highway Sevastopol we will enjoy a top view of Yalta, and Crimean palaces, Gorbachov’s datchaa, go through a cave- mountain pass called "Baidarskie Vorota" and will have a small stop to take pictures of an elegant Foros church (Church of the Ascension, pitched on a top of a high cliff rising over a settlement Foros).
In Sevastopol, a hero and a museum city, where ancient history and contemporary have intertwined, guests will be offered a city tour to explore numerous sights and monuments glorifying courageous defenders of Sevastopol in the Crimean War and World WarII. Our guided tour includes:
-a visit to the Panorama Paintaing “Defence of Sevastopol”, the only one Panorama in Ukraine, which is the battle painting on the canvas and the life-size object plan(115 m long, 14 m high). The panorama building is situated on one of the Sevastopol hills where nowadays military fortifications of the Crimean War period are being exposed (fleet ship anchors, artillery yards, old Russian cannons)
-a leisurely walking tour along the famous Istorichesky(Historical) and Primorsky(Seaside)Boulwards, Nakhimov Square and Grafskaya Pier, which boast of monuments, such as the Monument to the Scuttled Ships, placed offshore in the waters of Sevastopol Bay, reflecting the history and glory of the sea-side city.
-a 40 minutes boat ride from the Grafskaya Pier. You will watch the ships and hear the story of The Black Sea Fleet, which became an object of contention between Russia and Ukraine when the latter republic achieved independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. This trip would have been impossible for me only 10 years ago. As the base for the Soviet Black Sea fleet, Sevastopol was off-limits to all foreigners and most nonresident citizens. The "closed city" was not opened to outsiders until 1996, when Russia and Ukraine finally reached an agreement that allowed Russia to maintain its fleet in the city's harbors.
-visit to historic part of the city, an ancient Greek town Chersonesus, that existed 2.500 years ago. The defense structures have survived to our times, as well as a basilica, the antique theatre, the mint.
- famous Crimean battlefield - Malakhov Kurgan(barrow) where the defense of Sevastopol took place. memorial complex with Diorama-The Storm of Sapun Hill, various monuments and relics of the Crimean War and WWII. Together with The view of the city from the top of the hill is worth the climb.
