Internal Train Travel in The Ukraine

Ukrainian trains are reliable and normally punctual. They provide an econimical means of travelling long distances within TheUkraine. Many destinations are covered by overnight services with sleeping facilities, which will save you the expense of a hotel or apartment for that night. The overnight trains have restaurant carriages and a guard in every carriage, who will make you tea or coffee for about 10p/ 20c! It is the cheapest cup of tea in the whole of The Ukraine! You are provided clean bed linen for a nominal fee, approximately 20 UAH (£2/$4).

There are 2 classes of travel on the overnight trains. 2nd class compartments sleep 4 people and it is almost certainly the case that you will be sharing with 3 others.

1st class compartments sleep 2 people and it would be normal to be sharing with 1 other. If you are uncomfortable with this then it is possible to book the whole compartment without breaking the bank! However, sharing can be a good way of meeting Ukrainian people and making new friends.

Internal Flights in The Ukraine

Travel by air is possible to many cities in The Ukraine and is becoming a popular alternative to the trains amongst Ukrainians. They provide quick access to your destination, but can be subject to last minute cancellations in adverse weather conditions, although this is uncommon. A typical journey time from Kiev to Zaporozhye is about 1 hour. Your journey will be in a plane such as the one pictured here and there are normally 20 to 30 passengers on board. You will normally be treated to complimentary tea or coffee and cakes during the flight.

As with most internal travel in The Ukraine air travel is a relatively cost effective way of reaching your destination .The transfer from Terminal B ( where international flights land) to Terminal A ( where internal flights depart) is very simple. The distance between the 2 terminals is less than 200 metres. Although the recommended check in time is an hour and a half before departure, the check in desk is open up to 30 minutes before the flight and it is common for passengers to check in just before this time. Most of the staff at Terminal A speak English, so communication should be trouble free. Flights operate from Kiev to Simferopol (Crimea), Oddessa, Zaporozhye and other major cities.

It is impossible to quote prices here as the prices vary according to how far you book in advance, the season you are travelling etc. Email us your date and estimated time of departure, your destination and if required, return dates and times. Please include a contact telephone number. We will then tell you if your destination can be reached by air and supply an alternative by train if air travel is not possible. We can also book air tickets for you and our price will be inclusive of our booking fee.

As an example:
An air ticket from Kiev to Zaporozhye typically costs $120 for one way. On top of this there is a $10 to transfer your ticket details to Kiev, plus our handling fee of $20. Total cost=$150.
